Goals for 2006

We are planning to create 6 more gardens for OVCs (orphaned and vulnerable children) at new NCPs.

The school gardens for 2006 are focused in 2 areas. 3 will be NCP gardens and 3 will be working with 'school clusters'. School clusters are a new concept that we are, with the involvment of the Ministry of Education, working on establishing.
This pilot project will initially involve 3 'clusters' (3-5 schools per cluster - targeting those with high populations of OVCs), enabling us to run group workshops for the teachers and staff on life-skills, health, agriculture and psycho-social support for OVC's. This project is very similar in aim to our EFA school project but will be run through the Ministry of Education.

More workshops are scheduled.

COMMUNITY AGRICULTURAL DEVELOPMENT

January to April 2005, the agricultural sector was run by Mrs. J. Cox (Co-ordinator) and Mr. B. Mndzebele (Agricultural trainer). In May 2005, Mr. Sam Hodgson joined us, with the financial assistance of Skillshare. He will be with us for two years, while he manages this department and builds up capacity of Mr. B. Mndzebele, who will take over his duties.

Monitoring continued with our five NCP gardens, which had been established in 2004 and we also monitored the NCP gardens which were to be established by Agricultural Extension Officers in conjunction with FAO (these gardens did not materialize). Monies from UNICEF for 2005 were only released in late May 2005. Moya Trust used her own reserves as a bridging loan to enable the work to continue.

Manzini Region

Ngomane Farm (NCP)- Mahlangatsha area
The caregivers of this NCP were very enthusiastic and committed. They have a flourishing garden. 52 children benefit from this garden and 12 caregivers and community members have learned the skills, which they now implement at home.

Nkanjini (NCP)- Mahlangatsha area
This garden was established with the aid of 32 caregivers and community members, who were optimistic about their water source, a standpipe which has proved to be unreliable later in the year. Another workshop was given on the recycling of grey water, to maximise the use of available water. 79 OVCs have been registered at this NCP.

Bethany (NCP) - Mahlanya area
Rotary approached us and were very keen to establish a garden at the Bethany NCP. We had had problems in sourcing the gardening inputs and so gladly co-operated. The funding they gave us covered two gardens. The land which was allocated for gardening was on a steep slope. The spring above this land needs to be properly dammed and piped into the garden. Although this has been done, we have experienced some problems which are being addressed by the community.

Hhohho Region

Matfuntini NCP - Zone II - Hereford area (also with the aid of Rotary, Malkerns)
This is a particularly dry middleveld region. Here the caregivers are very hard working and enthusiastic. There were 31 participants in the training and the NCP currently has 93 OVCs registered. The garden is near to a small river which has year around supply of water. Their garden is now flourishing.

Training of Trainers

We were requested by World University Service to train their mentors, who each have a number of vulnerable households to take care of (child headed, gogo headed etc). Over 3 days we trained 28 mentors who all work in drought stricken and impoverished areas of Shiselweni and Lubombo.

FOA have funded establishment of :
70 NCP gardens and
30 EFA school gardens,
700 home based care gardens and

Moya Centre formed a partnership with UNICEF to train Agricultural Extension Officers and community members. We trained 70 agricultural extension staff and 36 community members.

2003 We concentrated on training trainers in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture. There is a division, the 4S agricultural clubs, whereby volunteer teachers and youth leaders hold workshops to encourage the children and youth to establish gardens throughout the country. We trained trainers from all 4 regions of Swaziland, all in all 144 participants.
We assisted Mhlabeni Primary School OVCs to establish a garden and we also established another neighboring community garden with their guardians. All of the above were also given skills in nutrition and income generation, through baking and cooking.
We then proceeded to the 5 Women in Development Centres of Swaziland, which are also in all 4 regions of Swaziland, where we trained 96 participants.

2002 We trained at Somnjalose High School - Ezulwini (30 students), Lozitha High School (35 students) in 2002 where we established gardens and provided ongoing monitoring for 12 months at each site
